Infamously known for its civil wars, colonial slave trade and poverty, the area is also noted for is ancient empires, the drumbeat of the Djembe, brilliant fabrics, diamonds and more than 1500 butterfly species. In Fon, one of West Africa’s 1,200 languages, butterflies are called awadapepe. These bright winged creatures represent transformation and hope. - a hope that is paramount in places like Benin, a West African country that ranks near the bottom (161 out of 177) of the United Nation’s human development index.
New Hope Benin, a locally initiated and locally led project, brings new hope to Benin, West Africa through education, a proven essential first step for reducing poverty. Through scholarships that pay for school fees, uniforms, books and supplies, New Hope Benin supports the education of primary and secondary school students, giving children, families and entire communities a key opportunity for sustenance and development.
